Funny Games is a brilliantly bleak, satirical, comedic and brutal home invasion film. In fact it may just be the best one there is.
It takes all the elements of films like The Last House On The Left, and in particular Penkinpah's Straw Dogs and turns them on their head, sadistically winking at the audience as it does it.
Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet star as the duo of brothers who invade the home of Naomi Watts and Tim Roth's characters. Already from the cast you can see that this isn't another run of the mill remake, it has a great cast behind it, and while they all give horrifyingly convincing performances, Pitt in particular is brilliant in this movie.
The way Funny Games differs from all other home invasion films is that it involves you, the audience in the horror. Pitt frequently breaks the fourth wall and tries to make you feel guilty for enjoying the film, asking you who's side your on and if you truly want them to stop what they're doing because you're participating by watching it as entertainment.
The film is masterfully crafted as it is actually very, very funny in parts but the minute you begin laughing at how clever of a satire it is and the overwhelming glee and politeness of the two psychopaths you find yourself shocked and disgusted the next.
I personally think its the only remake that exists that makes me not want to watch the original, his performance is that good, i don't need to see someone else in the role. I can't recommend this movie enough, it is a top tier home invasion flick with a twist.
