Extracurricular is an underrated gem. It's not received the strongest reviews online and I don't quite understand why, for a teen home invasion movie its really good. The pitch for this movie is basically "what if we spent all of Scream following Billy and Stu instead of Sidney Prescott".
Great concept, there are only two criticisms I have with this movie but they're not major, the first is that one of the gang of killers (the girl on the right in the picture) feels out of place in the group, she never gives off the menace you'd expect from a young serial killer but its a movie, not every film has to be realistic.
The group themselves are all good actors and like I say while they may not be as believable as say Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich in Scream as killers, they're all good in their roles. it's one of those movies where you throw realism out the window and enjoy your time with it.
The other criticism is that one officers police work when being called to a disturbance occurring at home is pretty damn weak but again, its a movie, how many times have we seen poor police work and horror films go together. It's basically a trope at this point, so not a huge issue.
Everything else I really dug man, the story has some unexpected turns, the music choices sync nicely with what's being shown on the screen, the group dynamic is good, its a well made movie that has echoes of dark home invasion films like Funny Games mixed with teen slashers like Scream and Tragedy Girls and the ending is badass.
I think it deserves a wider audience.
