Ouija: Origin Of Evil, I'm convinced everything Mike Flanagan touches turns to gold and this movie is proof of that. It had absolutely no reason why it should be a good film, it's a sequel to an already terrible movie, no one asked for it, no one was interested in seeing a sequel and yet its a very good film.
Mike Flanagan was clearly given free reign to do whatever he wanted with this film, it has a late 1960's aesthetic that permeates the whole film right down to the cigarette burns that appear on the corner of the screen during scene changes. As always with Flanagan's work the character drama is front and centre to the story and it pays off.
He has a real skill of taking expected supernatural tropes and presenting them in a way that is fresh and engaging. He is careful with his jump scares and he has a restrained use of music preceding them. The only downside to this film is its use of CGI, it never fully takes you out of the film because the film around it is is as good as it is, but it is noticeably bad in places.
Other than that I really like this movie,
its a great haunted house flick.
