The Boogeyman is a pretty by the numbers supernatural horror film. The main reason I was interested in watching this movie is that it features Sophie Thatcher as the lead who I really liked in Yellowjackets. I think any attachment I felt to her character was really because I like the actress, she's playing a very similar role to her role as Natalie in Yellowjackets and she's the best thing about the movie for me.
The rest is entertaining, predictable and fun. It does feature a relatively interesting looking villain but a lot of its design is very obviously stolen from the film Smile and like Smile the film never goes as far as it needs to in order to be frightening. It hints at doing something shocking and then pulls its punches because its aiming to please mainstream audiences who would be put off.
Overall its a perfectly decent movie
but pretty average
