Oculus is Mike Flanagan's take on your typical modern American ghost story and it is by far the best one of its kind. It is far, far superior to The Conjuring series and Insidious in that it actually isn't afraid to try to scare the audience without using cheap jump-scares, as always with Mike Flanagan the film focuses on terrifying things happening to well developed characters that the audience are made to care about. It follows the story of a brother and sister who's family are destroyed when their father becomes seduced by a sinister force hiding within an antique mirror.
Its central themes are very Steven King, the scars that are caused from childhood trauma and the broken adults who are still affected by them. Karen Gillan is the star of the show, as the eldest child manically trying to destroy the lasser glass once and for good.
I can't fault this movie at all, it's excellent.
