Bound To Vengeance is a gritty neo-grindhouse revenge movie about a young woman named Eve played by Tina Lvlev who turns the tables on her kidnapper who has abducted her and chained her in his basement. Once she obtains the upper hand she puts a rudimentary collar on her abductor and gets him to lead her to site where other victims are held, what follows is a descent into the all too real hell of human trafficking. I love this aspect of the movie, it's what stops it from being a full blown rape/revenge film, though the same themes that are found in say I Spit On Your Grave are still evident here, those being; the transformative nature of trauma and the survivor reclaiming ownership of their body through inflicting pain on their attacker.
It just takes these ideas and runs with them in a few different directions, exploring how different people respond to the same set of circumstances, not everyone has Eve's true grit.
The reason I haven't put it in the rape-revenge category is because it fits better alongside dark violent, gritty grindhouse movies than it does say a film like promising young woman.
There's not much that I didn't like about the film, I think it could have benefitted with a few things being expanded upon but the way it dealt with the subject matter was original, really , really dark and compelling. Tina Lvlev is excellent as the lead. If only they had pushed the ending a little further and cut out one particular subplot It would have easily earned a six star rating from me.
It still gets a recommendation because there is a lot of stuff to like here, if uncompromisingly dark violent revenge thrillers are your thing you should definitely check it out.
