The Dark (2018)

The Dark is a fitting title for this movie, it is indeed a very dark and unusual film but honestly it comes off as a try-hard and boring version of Let The Right One In.

I'll tell you the plot because I doubt you'll watch it, it's about a boy who is left blind after a pedophile burns out his eyes and kidnaps him, during the abduction the pedophile attempts to hide from the cops in a nearby wood but little does he know it is home to an undead girl with a thirst for blood. The girl makes quick work of the pedophile and becomes a companion to the traumatised child.

We are never given any clear answers or even an indication as to what the girl really is, she's somewhere between a vampire and a zombie. Her own backstory is equally as tragic as she was also a victim of sexual abuse which led to her death before she is reborn to darkness in the woods.

The plot meanders along at a snails pace with the only attempts at dialogue being vague mumbles between the two leads, the writers make no attempt at actually making either character empathetic, they simply thought, what's the darkest thing we can think of and that'll immediately make our film interesting. Well it fucking doesn't.

Let The Right One in is a great film because it actually builds a relationship between Oskar and Eli that has depth and complexity and is as horrifying as it is oddly endearing at times. Here you're left with two unsympathetic characters (they kill far too many people for little to no reason to make me feel anything for them) who we are only supposed to care about because they were abused.

That is not how you write characters.
To top it off the ending is an incomprehensible mess
that makes absolutely no sense.

The whole film is a slog to get through and has absolutely nothing to say. It's as if an edge-lord sixteen year old wrote the script to convince everyone that he's deep and interesting, when really its a contrived , pretentious mess.
