Cobweb is a dark fantasy/supernatural horror that has easily the best build up I've seen in a horror film for years, the sense of dread and eerie atmosphere the movie builds is palpable. The performances all across the board are great, especially from its young lead actor Woody Norman. It plays out very much like a grim fairy tale and there is so much to love about it, apart from one or two minor issues.
The plot revolves around a boy named Peter who begins to hear a voice talking to him from behind his bedroom wall. Now without giving anything away I can tell you that this voice at points was clearly inspired by Mercedes Mccambridge's voice as the possessed Regan McNeil in The Exorcist, it is that damn good. There are moments in this movie that genuinely scared me and I haven't felt that from a film for a good while.
Now onto the negative, as is often the case with horror films the ending has its issues, the reveal while incredible in parts in one or two shots did lose me, they build up this horrifying villain and then when you see its face a lot of that mystery is lost as what you're shown is not anywhere near as frightening as what I imagined.
I understand its due to the budget and that its director Samuel Bodin's first major motion picture debut and its a bloody good one but Here's the thing new directors should take note of if you don't have the budget to show your monster, don't. Show what you can and leave the rest up to the audiences imagination often that is where the nightmares live, not on the screen.
All that aside it's one of the best horror films I've seen this year so I do urge you to watch it, the build up is perfect and while the payoff is really great in parts I would be lying if I were to say that it doesn't mildly let you down in others.
