Venus (2022)

Venus is about a dancing girl who decides to rip off her criminal employers and has to hide out at her sisters apartment after making a narrow escape with a bagful of drugs. Suddenly without explanation her sister goes missing and she finds herself having to look after her niece while supernatural events begin to occur in the building, which is quickly drawing attention from the mob who are hunting her down. It's only a matter of time before things go south, but who will get to her first, the cursed building or the criminal underworld.

Venus got my attention because it was written by Fernando Navarro, writer of Veronica, one of my favourite demonic possession films and directed by Juame Balaguero, one of the directors who worked on Rec 1 and 2.

It blends genres really well, ninety percent of the film is a slow burning crime thriller and it gradually phases into an occult themed action-horror film. I enjoyed it, I don't think it stands up quite to standard of the other films the filmmakers have been attached to but that's a really high bar to set. It's a good movie,
my only criticism is that the payoff could have been better, by no means is it a bad ending, I was just expecting a little more based on what led up to It but this most likely was due to the budgetary restraints on the film.

The acting from the whole cast is pretty strong,
the only thing that makes me pause before give it a recommendation is the ending, it really did feel like it was building towards something bigger but it never really went there,
it set up a really bloody, violent ending but didn't commit to it.

Ultimately It's pretty good, kind of a mid-tier horror movie with a really good set up. It gets a slight recommendation from me.
