The Soska Sisters remake of Cronenberg's Rabid bares only a passing resemblance to the original film, and that's neither a positive or a negative, both films aren't very good and for different reasons, Cronenberg's original is frankly poorly put together even for a 1970's B movie it's not good at all and this well, its not all together terrible but its just not good, it focuses on the wrong elements of the story and wastes a lot of time on things that don't really matter.
For example there is a whole B plot of our main characters exploits as a fashion designer, which while it is laughably camp and entertaining in a "its so bad its good" way is an utter waste of time and adds nothing to the main narrative. So, what's the main narrative?
It's about a woman who is horrifically disfigured after a car accident who enters an experimental treatment which results in her having a thirst for human flesh.
The first act of the movie is actually quite good, our protagonist is set up quite well as a sympathetic lead, there is a good bit of body horror and the effects aren't bad at all, but then the rest of the film happens.
It's a shame, The Soska Sisters have directed one quality horror film, which is probably my favorite film in the Rape-revenge sub-genre that being "American Mary" with Katherine Isabelle. So its sad to see them fail at putting out a decent product. This movie is both too weird for its own good and too bland to leave a lasting impact.
It's not so bad that i turned it off,
and I sat through it,
albeit while checking my watch during the third act so i could get onto watching something of actual quality.
In closing, no, i don't recommend this film,
watch "American Mary" instead.
