The Substance

The Substance is what David Cronenberg would be making if he still knew how to make good movies. It's the first body horror film I've seen in a long, long time and it feels ripped out of the 80's.

The practical effects are grotesque and excellent as are Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley's performances. It is a surreal send up of the pitfalls of vanity and the Hollywood lifestyle, where pathetic disgusting old men leer after beautiful starlets who they have made feel completely and utterly worthless, while it does have a message it is darkly comedic and knows just how bat-shit insane it is.

I won't give away too much of the plot but its essentially a modern day take on the portrait of Dorian Grey mixed with The Fly.

I had no idea what the film was about going into it and I'm glad, it surprised me, I really enjoyed it. The sheer fact that i keep thinking about it days later is proof that you should watch it.
