The Girl With All The Gifts is a blend of 28 days later and The Last Of Us, apocalyptic London in this movie looks identical to the city scapes shown in The Last Of Us with its overgrown plants covering the streets and vines scaling the surface of every building. In fact the world building is so similar in parts that the infection used in this film is the cordyceps fungus and there's even infected with fungal growths on their bodies and spores even feature heavily. Though there are some significant differences between the two stories.
The film follows Melanie, one of a group of infected children,
who are being housed and studied in a military facility following the outbreak. There is an integral difference between them and the other infected, they have retained their complex cognitive functions, ability to communicate and are still somewhat human.
After the military base falls to hoards of the infected, her teacher, doctor and two members of the armed forces set out to survive in the inner city.
I won't go further into the plot than that because it'd ruin the film for you. I really enjoyed this movie, it's not perfect by any means but it does some really interesting stuff with the zombie sub-genre and took a few turns I wasn't expecting. I do have a few criticisms,
the actress for Melanie while serviceable, could have been marginally better. There's a few scenes in particular that are great in concept but felt a bit laughable in execution and there's a certain point where the film should have ended and the overall movie would have been more impactful.
Though those really are my only two gripes with the film, the latter is literally the closing shot of the movie so it's not a huge deal, it just felt superfluous and again a bit comical, especially when we'd already been given a very fulfilling ending already.
still, even with those criticisms I still think this is a good movie and one I can recommend that you check out if zombie apocalypse films are your thing, it's definitely one of the better ones out there though it does have a few glaring flaws.
