There are some movies you can't help but like, you know they're not technically "good" films, but they're entertaining and you grew up with them so even when you watch them years later and you see their flaws, you still can't help but enjoy them. Well, Underworld is one of those movies. For all its cheesiness I still think it is a pretty solid movie, the lore behind the war between vampires and werewolves that has been going on for an eternity, there's a few original twists and ideas thrown in that i appreciated and were a big part of knocking up the mark from a 4.5 to a 5 star rating. So, onto the best thing about the film.
The character Selene, the vampire, rogue death dealer, who hunts Lycans, (that's werewolves, for the uninitiated), and finds herself entangled in a romeo and juliette inspired love affair with a half breed werewolf/vampire may admittedly be as hot-topic as you can get but.....somehow it works, for the most part at least. The romance angle is lacking a bit, purely because Scott Speedman is extremely vanilla, but he's serviceable enough, he doesn't ruin the film but he could have been replaced by literally any actor, but he's not who you're watching underworld for.
I watch underworld for Kate, Beckingsale, who is iconic in the lead role. Also somehow they got Bill Nighy on to do the movie as the elder vampire Victor.
Underworld isn't so much a vampire film as its a comic book movie, it has the look and feel of the blade films, only the comic which exists for the film came about as an adaptation of the movie, weirdly enough. I think if you go in expecting comic book type action and plot points, its pretty enjoyable, its no daybreakers or blade but its good solid fun.
