Blood (2023)

Blood directed by Brad Anderson and starring Michelle Monaghan is a film that fits loosely into the vampire sub-genre. It is about a mother who's son develops an insatiable thirst for blood, driving her to commit any act necessary to attempt to quell his desires.

It's actually pretty good, I went in with zero expectations and decided to watch it solely because it featured Skeet Ulrich's return to horror, I haven't seen him in a horror film or a film for that matter since Scream. He's not the focus of this film though at all, Michelle Monaghan is really what stands out about this movie above all else, she is excellent in it.

I actually think for what this was it achieved what it set out to do,
It's very well acted by the main cast and it actually became unexpectedly dark at points. One particular narrative decision could be viewed as being in really bad taste and
quite questionable.

I don't feel it's a spoiler to tell you that we know that the mother is obviously going to run out of options of which to find blood for her boy and eventually resort to obtaining a human source, but its the choice of victim which I honestly found a little bit shocking.
I like that the film surprised me that it wasn't actually all that much about the boys condition but rather how his mother responded to it.

As far as negatives, the way in which the boy develops vampirism is never fully explained in any meaningful way, the audience are given a few very subtle implications of the catalyst behind his condition but sadly nothing is explicitly revealed, usually with horror less is more but in this case I think a well set up reveal in the third act would have added rather than subtracted from the film.

Overall I enjoyed it, Michelle Monaghan's performance sold me on the movie more than anything, I feel I can recommend it if you're at a loss for a movie to watch, overall for what it was it was pretty decent.
