The Night Listener is an underrated hidden gem starring Robin Williams, Toni Collette and Rory Culkin. The Night Listener is a noir thriller about a late night radio dj who strikes up a friendship with a dying traumatized boy over the phone, but before long he begins to suspect that all may not be as it appears.
This is a film about loneliness, human connection and empathy, themes which appear in a lot of Robin Williams's work and ones he can drive home like no other actor. Needless to say he's as great in this as he is in anything. Toni Collette is also brilliant, but again when is she not. Rory Culkin is also very good in the film in the scenes he's in but the movie is carried mainly by Collette and Williams.
The film itself is a tight original thriller, aspects of the premise perhaps you've seen elsewhere but it makes some choices that are unique. It doesn't quite go full on into thriller territory but it plays around that genre, it is predominately a thrilling drama rather than a psychological thriller.
I think its a shame people don't talk about it more,
It's one of his completely lesser known movies which appears to have been all but forgotten and its really quite good.
