Pitch Black is a nihilistic, dark, Sci/Fi movie that was originally written to be a sequel in the Alien franchise, a fact that becomes even more obvious on re-watch. The films entire aesthetic is borrowed from Alien but its just different enough that it feels like its own movie and its own universe.
This is the only film where I genuinely like Vin Diesel, he is intimidating, cool and menacing as Riddick, the convict with shinning, glowing eyes that can see in the dark, which comes in very handy in an eclipse.
I love the creature designs for the bioraptors, the design is so strong that it still holds up even with a bit of early 2000's CGI holding it back on the odd occasion.
I love that the the film is unnecessarily cruel and unforgiving, the bioraptors feel like an actual threat to the main cast, which is rare.
Its a very underrated sci/fi horror movie.
