The set up is essentially a British version of death wish, albeit with a few distinct differences. The film follows Harry Brown, a widower, ex-soldier and pensioner who's friend is viciously killed by a group of youths in an underpass.
Cain plays Brown like a man who the world has left behind, who in an act of madness or duty snaps and finds himself delving into the criminal underworld of london in search of the men who killed his friend. It is a great performance and one that has the control and nuance that only a veteran actor like Cain could bring to the role. The film works because you believe him.
Harry Brown may be a derivative revenge thriller but Michael Cain's performance is more than worth the price of admission.
