The Shallows is probably the best shark film since Jaws. Blake Lively is great as Nancy Adams, a surfer who has found herself stranded on a tiny rock far from shore being pursued by a relentless tiger shark.
Given that she is the only character on screen for the vast majority of the movie it takes really good actor to be able to keep the audiences interest and make them believe in the situation they're watching. You're rooting for her all the way.
The shark effects are the best in any movie and the animal looks and behaves like an actual wild predator, with a bit of dramatic licensing as it is of course hell bent on trying to kill her. When a real tiger shark would probably be more focused on the whale carcass nearby.
The thing this movie does especially well is its use of establishing shots to build tension, it uses wide views of the ocean shot from above to show where the shark is in relation to Lively's character, its an effective way of showing the audience where the danger is and how looming the threat of the shark is at all times.
She also gets her own chief Brody face down with the monster at the end. Overall, a very satisfying shark movie.
