The Harbinger (2022)

The Harbinger is the latest film from director Andy Mitton, It's set during the pandemic and is about a girl named Monique who ventures into the city to look after her friend Mavis who is suffering from relentless nightmares which are destroying her life. Mavis's nightmares all feature a character called The Harbinger, a demon who takes the guise of a plague doctor who appears during times of global devastation. The basic set up is very reminiscent of a nightmare elm street, a film this clearly pays homage to.

The most interesting and unique aspect of the movie is that The Harbinger doesn't kill its victims in their sleep, it erases them from history, every memory of them, every trace, gone. All that is left of them is a fleeting feeling that cannot be placed, a passing notion without a name to it, all but forgotten in the hearts of those who loved them. I love this idea. The film itself is just ok. The acting from the main cast is good. The negatives are that it never feels particularly intense or frightening and that more could be done with its premise but its well put together and the concept alone kept me watching it through to the end. It's not a bad film at all but it's not anything special either, it's a decent mid-tier low budget horror.
