The Omen

The First Omen, I've decided to review this series in chronological order, as I recently watched the prequel at the cinema and it is awesome.

The First Omen should have failed on all fronts, there is no reason for this film to have existed, or so you would assume, however it is probably going to turn out to be the best horror film of 2024. It is damn good. It's a film that understands what horror used to be, it brings new audiences the slow burn 1970's feel of the original with some added surrealist elements and It is a dark, dark film, which is unafraid of committing to the more disturbing elements of its story.

Nell Tiger Free is brilliant in this movie, there is a bit of Isabelle Adjani, (from the possession) about her, one scene in fact is a direct reference to the possession, albeit the scene itself is far better executed in The First Omen. Her characters story is a tragic one, we know what the outcome will be, for the most part and you do feel attached to her before the inevitable horror befalls her at the end of the film.

I haven't been frightened watching a movie for some time and there are a few sequences in The First Omen which genuinely scared me.

The soundtrack, acting, dimly lit and somber atmosphere alone make it one of the best films of 2024.

Rarely does an image from a horror film stay with me in the same way that the opening of this movie has, It is bloody excellent.
