The original Child's Play is a classic, unlike the films that followed the comedic moments here are few and far between, its a much creepier film than any of the sequels and i love it.
It reminds me a lot of Candyman, the whole mystery and occultism surrounding Charles Lee Ray, and the investigative angle of Andy's mother trying to figure out exactly what is going wrong with her son and his new "Good Guy" doll. Its a hard thing to get the audience to take a film with a plot as silly as Child's Play seriously but the film manages to in my opinion, because it takes such an out there plot but delivers it in a completely straight faced fashion, you buy into it.
Its a well acted, zany 80's slasher that is responsible for creating the Icon that is Chucky. I have nothing bad to say about this movie.
Child's Play is one of the few film franchises to hit a home run twice,
Child's Play 2 is every bit as good as the original and while it doesn't have the same dark investigative tone of the original film, it opts to do what every good sequel should do, its a larger scale, epic continuation to the story set up in the first film.
I love sequels that start exactly where the first film ended, you can very easily watch Child's Play 1+2 together as one film. They are perfect companion pieces to each other. Here Andy is sent to live with a foster family after his mother is sent to a mental institution after the events of the original movie, but shortly after he arrives, Chucky has returned to claim his body.
The practical effects in Child's Play 2 are a vast improvement upon the original, we get to see a lot more of Chucky in action due to the films bigger budget, Chucky is a sadistic little bastard and he looks damn menacing in the film at times.
The ending in the toy store is iconic,
if the original set up the stage for a new horror icon to be born, this is the film that cemented his place in the mount Rushmore of Slasher villains.
Child's Play III gets loads of undeserved hate, while it may not be as good as the first two it is loads of fun. The film revolves around Andy being sent to military school and Chucky returning from the dead to finish what he started in the first film.
The setting adds a lot to the movie, if you think about it Andy's story is deeply sad, he has lost everything because of Chucky, his mum's gone insane, he has no home, no friends and now he's in military school, all because of that fucking doll.
The film is as quirky as the first two and some surprisingly shocking kills and features one of the best Chucky moments of the entire franchise, I don't understand why people don't like it. Its pretty good
Bride Of Chucky is loads of fun, this is where the series became a full on comedy satire and the premise of Chucky is so ridiculous to begin with that its a sub-genre that it lends itself to nicely.
This film has my favorite Chucky design, with his face battle torn and stitched together. Tiffany, Chucky's bride played by Jennifer Tilly is a great addition to the series, it gives someone for Chucky to play off and Tilly and Brad Dourif have great chemistry.
The story focuses on Tiffany and Chucky using two young lovers as patsy's for their crimes, by forcing the teenagers to take them on a road trip across America leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.
It has a great soundtrack, oddball characters and is a natural progression to this wacky franchise.
Seed Of Chucky, this film is a lot better than i remember, its so wacky and fun.
The movie is a meta take on the Chucky series and pokes a load of fun at Jennifer Tilly who is a great sport for letting herself be the butt of pretty much every joke in the film.
The story revolves around the Chucky's offspring trying to find his parents in Hollywood, while they attempt to artificially inseminate Jennifer Tilly and possess her and Redman. The plot is ridiculous and the film is surprisingly hilarious.
Seed Of Chucky is also the first film I’ve seen to cover the concept of a character being non-binary,
but it does so without being preachy, it uses the concept for situational humour and it works.
Chucky also gets a nice character arc, deciding at last that he is done with trying to become human and instead is content being one of the most notorious slasher villains of all time.
Its an underrated movie in the franchise for sure.
Curse Of Chucky is jarring when you watch the films in order, its a natural progression from the first film to Seed Of Chucky, the series gets progressively more out there, but then this movie attempts to bring the tone back to that of the original two films, that's not to say its a bad film, its good but it does feel the most out of place of all the films so far.
I think the film starts quite slow and gets better as it goes along and has a very surprising ending. I like that it introduced a new final girl in Fiona Doriff, Chucky hasn’t had a main threat for a few movies now, and I like the backstory, I wasn’t a fan of Chucky’s look this time around, well until half way through the film, but again I understand what they were going for by returning to the original Child's play aesthetic for Chucky.
Its a good slasher for sure and a welcome addition to the franchise, even if tonally its completely different to the last two entries.
Chucky the series had no right to be this good. Chucky is one of the few slasher franchises that doesn't have a bad entry, in fact, in may be the only one. The series is everything you would want from a Child's Play tv show, its extremely violent, funny, dark and unashamedly quirky. It combines the semi-serious slasher tone of the original three films with the satire spoof insanity of the later sequels. It is a love letter to every single Child's Play movie.
The new cast of characters are pretty strong for the most part, but Lexi played by Alyvia Alyn Lind is by far the best new entry to the series, her characters progression is executed really well and you find yourself rooting for someone who in the first season you were supposed to be repelled by. That's one of the things this show does brilliantly, every character is fleshed out and so when the kills come and they come in quick succession as the series builds, there are actual stakes.
Alongside the new cast are all of the returning cast from every Child's Play film, and I mean all of the main cast, even Andy comes back after not having played the character for twenty odd years and its all of the original actors. The series is a natural progression of the films and the tying up of all of the loose ends that were left in the sequels.
Fiona Dourif is another highlight of the returning cast, Dourif plays both a young Charles Lee Ray and Nica, the lead from Curse and Cult of Chucky. The amount that she looks and sounds like her father is insane and her Chucky impression is flawless.
For me the stand out was Season 2, it took everything that worked with the original series and expanded upon it, its very Bride Of Chucky and has some hilarious references to other films including, A Clockwork Orange and Apocalypse now,
and many more.
Season 3 may not have been as good as the first two seasons but overall it was still loads of fun. I think the bar was just set extremely high. That said, overall its the best horror property I've seen adapted to a TV show, yes, its better than Ash Vs Evil Dead.
