I'm amazed this won awards, just goes to show how rigged the academy is, because there is a speech from Robbins that is straight up Razzie material. The set up is interesting, it is trying to be about what happens when childhood trauma is unresolved but it honestly isn't anywhere as deep or as interesting as it thinks it is.
In the words of Peter Griffin, the film"insists upon itself".
The story revolves around a murder case and has the most unsatisfying conclusion possible, if only for the purpose of being subversive. It doesn't even bother to make sense of its reveal.
By the time the mystery unraveled I was left thinking, really, is that it, that's what I've spent hours waiting for. I'm all for dark endings but it needs to make logical sense, this ending makes no sense whatsoever and is brushed aside because it feels like the writers knew that if they paused on it for a second anyone with a modicum of intelligence would realize how fucking stupid it is.
Great actors cannot save a melodramatic script, the acting in this movie is cheesy and forced, also the music is so over done, there is a rising string section as if the film thinks its a dramatic epic but makes the whole movie feel like a cheesy network television special.
The movie entertained me at least for the most part but i think that's why I'm so pissed off about it, it was decent for most of its runtime, it had problems but it kept my attention and had some genuinely good moments but then it amounted to sweet fuck all and expected me to be impressed.
I'm scoring it extremely low because of the absolute waste of time it becomes at the end. What a fucking pretentious movie. I'm returning it tomorrow, something I rarely ever do.
