Stigmata

Stigmata is an early 2000's religious horror movie that you can tell suffered greatly from studio meddling. It's unsure if it wants to be a psychological think-piece on the state of catholicism or a horror movie made solely for the MTV generation.

The editing in this movie is so all over the place at times, there are so many unnecessary subliminal images and fast cuts that you begin to be unsure if you're watching a thriller or a music video. The soundtrack is equally unbalanced as it features both cheesy Nu-metal and an orchestral score of somber choir singing.
It's an uneven mess of a movie, however it has some really good ideas and two very good actors in it, (Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Arquette) its a shame that it just wasn't a very good film.

One concept in particular I have never seen in a horror film before and it's a really unique intelligent take on the possession trope.
Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Arquette are also as good as they can be given the script and the overall story could make for a great film,
but everything else about it ranges from average to flat out bad.
I don't hate the film but I do hate that it clearly wasn't given the opportunity to be a better one.
