The Last Exorcism

The Last Exorcism directed by Daniel Stamm is a found footage exorcism movie which actually does something really innovative with the genre, for the most part.

We follow a retired exorcist named Cotton Marcus played by Patrick Fabian, who is more of a swindler and a showman than a priest as he seeks to dismantle the myth of demonic possession by staging a fake exorcism. It's this aspect of the movie that's really clever, its unique and sets the film apart from others like it.

The vast majority of the film is shot in a documentary style,
with the audience viewing the tricks Cotton is using to essentially perform what he believes Is only a type of psychodrama on the possessed girl who he truly feels is just severely psychologically disturbed.

There's bits of humour here and there but they're slight and feel very natural, the overall tone is ominous and foreboding,
It gives you more or less everything you want from a demonic possession film until it falls apart in the last five minutes,
everything up until that point is excellent.
It's a real shame when lacklustre endings happen to really solid movies, still , I've seen it plenty of times and its only the last five minutes that let it down, overall I'd easily recommend this to anyone who likes this sub-genre.
check it out.
