Veronica (2017)

If you like the demonic possession sub-genre, you need to watch the Spanish film Veronica directed by Paco Plaza (one of the directors of the excellent Rec and Rec 2) it is hands down the best possession film since The Exorcist, the reason for this is that it understands exactly what is frightening about that movie, you can tell that Paco Plaza has studied The Exorcist and gets that what makes an effective possession story is how invested you are in the character who the demonic attack is aimed at.

Its beautifully directed and shot and tells a simple but effective story, driven by its lead performance from Sandra Escancena as Veronica, the thing I love about this film is that unlike the vast majority of "Exorcist rip offs" which lets be frank, make up most of this sub-genre, Veronica is not made to be a victim waiting to be saved by a priest, she is a fighter.

The story opens with Veronica and two of her friends using a Ouija board during an eclipse in order to contact Veronica's father,
and instead open a doorway for a malevolent demon to enter our world binding itself to her soul, this brief synopsis is not anything you haven't seen before but its the way in which the story plays out, how attached you feel to her character and how well executed it is that makes it stand well above all other films in this sub-genre, bar the original Exorcist yes it is that good.
