The Passenger is the most underrated film of 2023, It is an excellent character piece which features one of the best performances of the year from Kyle Gallner as the lead antagonist Benson an unhinged and severely disturbed fast food chain employee who has kidnapped his coworker after massacring everyone in their workplace with a shotgun and goes on a road trip with Benson forcing him to confront the trauma of his past.
The premise in some ways reminds me of Snowtown as it focuses on what happens when a psychopath intercepts someones life but whereas Snowtown is as disturbing as they come, The Passenger leans into its premise with undertones of black comedy. It is extremely intense, fast paced and engages you right from the off.
The only negative and let me make this very clear it's a very minor one as I think elements of the ending are fantastic, the acting especially, but I would have liked a fraction more from it but it does work for the story its telling. It's realistic and so it's pretty hard to fault it, but I felt they were heading toward something a little bigger but overall I did leave very satisfied.
I really can't praise Kyle Gallner's performance enough, it is one of the best psychopath performances in a film and he is so damn captivating to watch. Definitely check this one out, it's great.
