V for Vendetta is one of the few Alan Moore adaptations that actually works when translated to the big screen.
While I have not read the comic I have heard that the message, tone and character of V all deviate from the source material; from what I understand the comic focuses mainly on authoritarianism vs anarchism, where as the film focuses on libertarianism vs totalitarianism and V himself is apparently far more sympathetic in the film. I think these changes make sense, both for the Bush/blair era which the film was released in and the changes to V's character make him more of a sympathetic lead, which is important considering some of the cruel things he does in the movie.
