The VVitch

The VVitch is the first major motion picture from writer/director Robert Eggers and its strongest element is by far its atmosphere; even in his debut Eggers displays a very unique and distinct style, its gothic, dark and beautifully shot.

The VVitch has been described before as being The Shinning with witches, a fitting description i think as in the VVitch what you are watching is a family slowly going insane because they are being preyed upon by dark forces beyond their control. The witches who live in the nearby woods who have a covenant with the devil in the form of a goat named Black Phillip.

Without telling you too much about the film, I think Eggers film is ultimately about female empowerment during a time of extreme misogyny and prejudice, paranoia and repression.

The cast are all excellent, Anya Taylor Joy (who makes her debut in acting in this film) and Ralph Ineson in particular are great.

Like all of Eggers films The VVitch could easily have been a stage play, if you like minimalistic, brooding horror,
this one is for you.
