Season 1:
I really enjoyed the first season of Yellowjackets. It's not what I expected given the synopsis and the tone of the first episode, which alluded to something more gritty and disturbing rather than the quirky mystery/black comedy that it is, however I still binged watched the entire season in a few days so I definitely enjoyed it.
Yellowjackets is about group of survivors, a girls soccer team who crash-land in the middle of the Canadian wilderness as teenagers, and naturally when food becomes scarce they have to resort to enjoying a different type of cuisine. The show is split between the events following the crash in 1996 and the present day where we see the broken adults the survivors have become.
While the former is more compelling both kept me wanting to find out what happened next. Out of the cast of teenagers Sophie Thatcher as Natalie and Samantha Hanratty are by far the most interesting, as is the case with their older counterparts played by by Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci.
The show isn't without its faults, it can be a bit cheesy and overtop and it is aimed toward a late-teen audience, so it doesn't have the depth of say a Mike Flanagan series, but while its nothing groundbreaking it is really enjoyable.
Season 2:
While there was a lot to like in season 2 of Yellowjackets, it was a complete mess, character motivations in certain places made absolutely no sense, the writing was rushed and while I enjoyed the comedic tone of the second season it's not what the story needed. They set up a very dark premise and have yet to really deliver on it. Also I don't think the writers have a clue where they're headed as it was pretty disjointed. However I really enjoyed the chemistry between Elijah Wood and Christina Ricci and her character Misty has proved to be the most consistently good thing about the show. The rest really needs improvement.
