The Girl Who Got Away

The Girl Who Got Away is about a woman who was kidnapped by a crazy woman as a child and held captive until she managed to escape, years later her kidnapper breaks out of prison to track her down, well, that's what it is about at the beginning and how it should have stayed. A film like this should be easy to write, the killer stalks our lead, murders those close to her until the survivor stops them in a bloody and cathartic finale. It could have been a very decent by the numbers horror/thriller but oh no, it had to try and be clever.

I love the premise, sure it would have basically been Halloween if you replaced Michael Myers with a insane old woman as the villain but I would have been totally fine with that, not every horror film needs to be original to be good. There are plenty of decent movies with a basic premise like that.

The build up is actually fairly decent, albeit with a few issues within the first hour, the acting isn't always good, it's passable,
but nothing special and sometimes the emotion to certain scenes isn't communicated very well, but hey like I said, I'm not looking for Schindlers list with a movie like this, just to be entertained and the first hour does that. It has an engaging mystery, bits of creepy imagery here and there but then it takes a steep dive into absurdity and keeps getting worse and worse and worse until it ends.

Characters make decisions that make literally zero sense,
and the choices that were made with how the lead would react to certain situations is so inconsistent and beyond stupid it becomes totally laughable. Sticking the landing with a thriller like this is beyond easy, some directors really need to be told, "look you're not clever enough to write twists into a script, in fact, you're a fucking idiot , keep it simple and you'll be fine" sadly no one did and the final product suffers because of it.
