You're Next

You're Next is a black comedy, home invasion slasher movie directed by Adam Wingard, starring Sharni Vinson as the lead.
The film is about a family reunion which gets violently interrupted by a gang of psychopaths wearing animal masks who are intent on killing all inside. That is until they discover that one of the group is more capable of protecting herself than they could have possibly believed. 

There was a lot of buzz for this film when it came out which I personally don't get, it's an enjoyable film but I've seen everything here done better in other movies and I didn't find it to really be innovative at all. From what I've read its supposed to be a twist that Sharni Vinson's character just happens to be really good at killing people but that is the plot to literally every slasher film ever made. The Killer shows up, murders everyone but one girl who proves that she is more than they bargained for, .....yeah, that's not a plot twist, that's the literal definition of what a final girl is.

Anyway, the positives are that it doesn't take itself too seriously and that's its a fun way to spend an hour and a half, I did enjoy it and there are far worse movies out there than this, Sharni Vinson is a pretty good final girl and there are moments where its hard to predict when kills will occur. 

The negatives are that it doesn't do anything new and doesn't have anything to distinguish it from other middle of the road films within the slasher sub-genre. You don't really care about the characters so when they die it really means nothing, the kills aren't anything special and it's pretty predictable overall, the worst thing about the movie though is its overuse of shaky cam during fight scenes. Overall I thought it was fun but it is really overhyped for what it is, which Is just a silly, fun turn off your brain slasher movie.
