Sick directed by John Hyams and written by Scream writer Kevin Williamson is a slasher that takes place during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, two girls are targeted by a masked attacker while staying in lockdown at our final girls parents lavish wood cabin.
It's very similar to Scream in many ways,
the opening kill in particular could have been in a Scream movie and the psychopath communicating through text taunting the victim were both perhaps intentional nods to Scream, the title card appearing just after the first kill and the killers revealing their motives were two things that were also straight out of that franchise.
If the killers were wearing ghost-face masks,
it would have made for a decent entry,
the movie does hold up on its own merit,
its a good slasher flick with relentless chase sequences
and some mildly creepy moments but you really do find yourself thinking, huh, this is basically Scream.
I suppose as Kevin Williamson wrote that as well he's not ripping anyone but himself off. The film really has that distinct satire and commentary that Williamson is known for, only this time its not revolving around horror trivia but the mass hysteria that resulted from the pandemic.
I'd say its worth a watch,
It's pretty good, the motives of the killers were interesting
and made what really is a pretty good albeit generic film
a little bit more unique.
