Carrie

Part of me is reluctant to even call "Carrie" a horror film because up until the last twenty minutes it is the story of a girl who just wants to fit in and is destroyed by the world around her, whether its the merciless bullying she endures at the hands of her classmates or the relentless narcissistic abuse she suffers at the hands of her fundamentalist christian mother, Carrie is beaten down constantly by a cruel and unfeeling world.

When watching it today I thought, the real tragedy of Carrie is that she was supposed to be a miracle, but the world took her and turned her into a monster.

The film hinges on Sissy Spacek's performance which is nothing short of masterful, Spacek has an otherworldly quality to her, her fragility and vulnerability is endearing, she's quiet and skittish but there's always the sense that underneath her meekness there's something hidden.

I don't think Carrie is an out and out horror film, i think its a tragedy, it drifts into horror but there's more to it than that.

You're watching someone beautiful get systematically broken down until all that's left is rage.

That's Carrie in a nutshell and it is a masterpiece.
