Red Rooms is a phenomenal french canadian psychological thriller which I imagine many people missed out on this year, It is by far the best thriller of the year. It has moments which are flat out terrifying, and it isn't in any way visceral, its frightening because of the ideas it presents and what it doesn't show you. That is how you make good horror.
It touches on a subject which has received some coverage from other films but none which truly delve into the true nature of the beast that is the dark web and online red rooms. Naturally being a french film it is unafraid to approach this subject in all its horror and that is why it is hands down the best film on the topic. It is also the only film which i have seen broach the subject of hybristophilia and frankly that the scariest part of the whole movie.
It also deals with the potential immorality behind the consumption of true crime media, putting forward the argument that a person has to be somewhat divorced from the subjects true nature in order to engage with it. And that if they truly understood the reality of what they're watching, their focus would be on the victims and not on the perpetrators.
This is a film that everyone who is into psychological thrillers should have watched this year and yet i doubt it will ever get the reception it deserves.
A really solid movie.
