If you've seen Marrowbone you might be wondering why its in the ghost/supernatural sub-genre on this page, the reason for this is that the film is set up that way, it turns into something else entirely at the end but its mostly a period piece which uses many of the tropes associated with this particular sub-genre. So what did I think of it?.
Marrowbone is overly long, boring and completely undeserving of its runtime. I watched it on the basis that it featured Mia Goth and Anya Taylor-Joy, sadly the film itself proved that even those great actresses cannot save it from its tiresome dirge of a plot. There is nothing remotely interesting or unique about this movie and I'm frankly shocked that it features on some hidden gems lists.
I'll give you an outline of the story, which will be brief and to the point, unlike this film. Following the death of their mother four Siblings live in their family home which appears to be haunted by a ghost, through a series of boring and tedious non events, nothing happens until the ending where a predictable twist is revealed.
The acting from all but the two aforementioned actresses is stilted and forced. The pacing is awful, the cinematography is unremarkable but not the worst thing about the film. It spends a lot of time, and I mean a lot of time trying to get you to feel invested in its characters but the writers did not work hard enough at presenting them as anything more than one dimensional and bland cliches. It thinks it's a cross between a Jane Austin novel and Shutter Island but its not, its fucking crap.
Mia Goth deserves better than this as does Anya Taylor-Joy.
The worst crime a film can commit is wasting your time,
its ending is nonsensical, overly convoluted and flat out stupid.
I've already spent more words on this movie than it deserves,
end of review.
