Unfriended 2 : The Dark Web is a really enjoyable movie, it's one of those films that plays out as if you're watching through a computer screen. I find that when low-budget movies use this technique it can often be pretty effective.
The central theme of the film as the title would suggest is cyberphobia, a group of friends meeting up on game night happen to discover that one of them is using a laptop belonging to a dark web merchant. I really enjoyed the narrative, I do think though it could have been more disturbing.
The first half of the film has a great build up, its genuinely unsettling as the friends begin to discover the illegal files and tapes stored on the computer. I think its use of restraint does work, the descriptions you're given of certain things is quite chilling but I think given the subject they could have amped it up a tad. We are talking about red rooms here, I need to see what's on those tapes and they need to be horrific. But it all lands the same regardless.
That said its very well acted for a web-based movie and the film uses that approach to effectively draw you in and keep your attention throughout.
