The Hallow directed by Corin Hardy is an Irish-folklore based horror film that deals with changelings, fairies and things that go bump in the night.
Irish folk-lore isn't really a thing you see a whole lot of in the horror genre which works in the films favour as unless you're fully versed in Ireland's myths and legends you're not quite sure what the rules are and what to expect.
I enjoyed watching it and though its fairly unique I don't think its anything particularly special but not every film you watch has to be, for the most part it worked pretty well for me, it's decently acted, intense and spooky where it needs to be for the most part and I enjoyed its use of practical effects over CGI (which is used extremely sparingly) there's only one real very minor issue with the movie.
Everyone knows that the creature reveal in a film like this is as important as the build up to it, I think it could have had some scarier creature designs in parts, its really just the initial reveal that fell a bit flat to me, the designs overall looked quite good but not as good as I imagined they would be based on the glimpses we are given before they're fully shown to the audience.
It works best if viewed as a dark fantasy,
which I imagine it was intended to be more so than anything else,
if that sounds like your kind of thing I'd check it out.
