Sinister

Sinister, I remember not liking this movie as much as most people, but upon re-watching it, I actually enjoyed this a lot. I think my dislike originated from it being extremely over hyped online, no it isn't the scariest film ever made, its not even close to that, but what it is, is a very effective modern horror movie.

A good cast can elevate a film which without them would be fairly generic, Ethan Hawke is the reason this film works, he is believable as the obsessed writer who's family has moved into a murder house, so that he can immerse himself in the content he's writing about.

The home movies also are a strong element of Sinister and the film while generic in some respects definitely has a creepy atmosphere.

For a mainstream american horror, its definitely a good one.

Sinister II starts off well enough with the plot following James Ransone's "Deputy So and So" from the original movie as he tries to put a stop to Baguul's plot to get kids to murder their parents, but it quickly becomes a generic and mindlessly stupid film with one dimensional laughable characters that are impossible to care about.

There is an abusive parent in this movie that is so over the top its hilarious, I shouldn't be laughing when someone abuses their wife and kids, but it is so poorly done and over dramatic all you can do is laugh.

This film has more in common with the first Insidious than it does with the first Sinister, the scares are cheap, annoying and loud and the movie has no reason to even exist other than to cash in on the success of the first film.
