Let me start by saying that this might possibly be my favourite exploitation/slasher film and I urge you to go see it if you like gritty dirty movies.
Candy Land directed by John Swap is a seedy, nasty little film about a group of prostitutes called "The Lot Lizards", who happen upon a devout cultist who appears to have been cast out of her congregation and with nowhere to go ends up joining their ranks,
until a psychopathic killer begins to pick them off one by one.
The thing this film does so well is that while it is an over the top bloody and violent exploitation slasher flick it takes the time to actually make you feel invested in characters who could easily be dismissed as immoral reprobates living on the outskirts of life,
turning tricks to make a quick buck.
A large portion of the film is centred around their daily life,
there is a humanity to them that feels real and genuine,
they're presented as decent people who have chosen an alternative and very dangerous line of work, which is emphasised in some of the more disturbing scenes in the film.
There is a core theme throughout of the hypocrisy of the actions of those who claim to have achieved purity and are anything but, judging others who are intrinsically innocent but live a decadent lifestyle, but its interwoven into the plot, that said its not preaching at you at all, its just a consistent undercurrent I noticed while watching it.
At its core its a sleazy, brutal exploitation flick,
and its earned its place immediately as one of my favourites
in this very niche sub-genre,
if you enjoyed Ti West's X you will love this.
