Malum

Malum is a remake of 2014 film called Last Shift, in some ways it improves upon the original, in others it's a far inferior movie.
from what I understand the director of Last Shift chose to remake his own film because he wanted to shoot the exact same story only with a bigger budget and while the money put into it does make the film look better, it's not a better film by my recollection at least.

Both films are about a rookie cop taking on the night shift at a rundown police station where a group of cultists (essentially the Manson family) killed themselves years prior, before long ghostly things start happening and she's must attempt to survive the night alone.

The special effects are better in Malum (bar one silly looking demon) and while the changes in the script do try to add some character depth, they come off feeling cheap, plot hole filled and ultimately stupid and unnecessary.

I also noticed that the general performances from everyone but the lead actress were fairly hammy and generally worse than its predecessor. I don't really understand remaking a film that already worked, especially when it wasn't released all that long ago,
Malum is fine enough and I enjoyed it for what it was, a familiar retread of a vastly superior movie.
