Killer Joe directed by William Friedkin and Starring Matthew McConaughey is a pulp crime thriller about a family of filthy down on their luck rednecks who hire a psychotic detective who moonlights as a hitman to kill the father of the family's ex wife so that they may collect the insurance money, with one catch, he desires the teenage daughter as a retainer for his services.
It's one of those movies which are focused on depicting what happens when a psychopath becomes embedded in a family,
and manipulates them all to satisfy his own selfish, cruel and sadistic desires, there's a bit more to it than that story-wise but that's the crux of the film. Matthew McConaughey is brilliant in it.
It reminded me in some ways of Friedkin's previous film "BUG" in the way it progressively builds into insanity.
The dialogue is very Tarantinoesque and it manages being both extremely darkly funny and very disturbing at the drop of a hat, it lands the tonal balancing act its trying to pull off perfectly.
My only criticism is that it ends very abruptly,
other than that, it's a lot of fun and I definitely recommend it.
