Joker: Folie à Deux is not a sequel that needed to be made, its not a film that the fans asked for, and its clearly not a film that was conceived with any real idea of what it was supposed to be or what it was supposed to say, although director Todd Phillips would like you to think otherwise.
It is however, quite enjoyable.
The first and second act feel like a continuation of the story of the first film with a few welcome changes, most significantly the inclusion of musical numbers and a brighter color palette, but it still retains the same somber and dark atmosphere of the original. Personally I like musicals so I enjoyed that aspect of it, albeit while acknowledging that it was mildly off putting at first that both Pheonix and Gaga and purposefully singing out of key in order to stay in character; But i digress, it worked for me, that is until it didn't.
The ending is well, a joke. Its a joke with a good set up and a downright terrible, insulting punchline. Go to watch it for its cinematography and its absurd nature, but if you're looking for a good joker film maybe go watch the dark night again.
